The Bear Gulch 2 fire in the summer of 2006, was an eye opener to the
possibility of a wildfire that could impact the community. After that
fire, DNR worked with Leonard Allott (Doc) a Lake Cushman resident, to
create a Community Wildfire Protection Plan, establishing Lake Cushman
as a Firewise Community. Lake Cushman Firewise Council was formed, to
provide Firewise education to the community. The concept is actually
quite simple, utilizing Firewise principles, property owners can greatly
increase the probability of their property withstanding a wildfire. And
due to the fact that Lake Cushman is surrounding by areas of dense
forest with high fuel content, this is extremely important.
